Lecture on "Climate Change altering face of Himalayas" delivered | | | Early Times Report
Kathua, 4 April: Harjit Singh from the Centre for the Study of Regional Development, School of Social Sciences Jawahar Lal Nehru University, New Delhi delivered an Extension lecture in Post Graduate department of Geography on "Climate Change altering face of Himalayas". Harjit who traveled in the vast hilly and mountainous region of the Himalayas said the effect of climate change could be devastating as the Himalayas provide food and energy for 1.3 million people living in river basins down stream. He further revealed that Environmental campaigners refer to the mountain range as the third pole and say the melting glaciers are the biggest potential contributors to rising sea levels after north and south poles. Singh has given the examples of Ladakh, where all life depends on snow climate change is changing this, less snow is falling, so there is less moisture for growing crops. Prof. Nater Singh, Principal Government Degree College, Kathua introduced the topic with these remarks that climate change thus initially leads to widespread flooding, but over time, as the snow disappears there will be draught in Summer. He further revealed that in Ganga, the loss of glaciers melting down would reduce July-September flows by two thirds causing water shortages for 500 milion people and 37% of India's irrigated land.Prof. V.S. Manhas, H.O.D. Post Graduate department of Geography concluded the question answer session. Prof. Gurdyal, Pawan Kumar, Onkar Singh, P.K. Rao, C.P. Sharma, Janak Singh, N.K. Gupta, Gopal Sharma and all the P.G. students were main participants. Gurdyal presented a vote of thanks. |
