JUTA suspends agitation | Resolves to continue fight for full implementation of 6th pay commission | | Early Times Report
JAMMU, Apr 4: The agitating teachers of Jammu University today decided to suspend their ten-day long agitation in support of their demand for the full implementation of 6th Pay Commission and UGC guidelines. A decision to this effect was taken in the General Body Meeting (GBM) of Jammu University Teachers Association (JUTA) held here today after long deliberations. The teachers decided to suspend the agitation which had been going on for the last 10 days and announced that classes would resume from Monday onwards. The JUTA, however, made it clear that the agitation is only being suspended and not called off. This was after the Vice Chancellor of the University of Jammu Prof M P S Ishar informed a gathering of the teachers about the meeting of the Vice Chancellors of the Universities of Kashmir and Jammu with the Chief Minister who informed them about the govern ment's decision to release of 20 percent of the arrears due to the teachers. Speaking to the teachers, Prof Dalip Singh Jamwal, President, JUTA thanked the chief minister and the Vice Chancellors of the two Universities for the initiative that they took and stated that it was in the same spirit of reciprocity that the JUTA decided on this course of action. Prof Jamwal also expressed his gratitude to Jammu's civil society, the electronic and print media and as well as the student community who he described as the University's most valuable asset, for their support and understanding. Prof Jamwal reminded the JUTA that while Sixth Pay Commission set up for University/College Teachers under University Grant Commission (UGC) had submitted its report in 2009 for new service conditions, promotions, superannuation age and arrears along with the provision of the financial package from MHRD. Although the government of Jammu & Kashmir has already implemented the new stringent norms for recruitment and promotion, it was reluctant to implement the incentive part of the UGC package, which was unacceptable to University teachers. |
