Congress stands condemned, Jammu parties up in revolt | Delimitation & Empowerment | | NEHA JAMMU, Apr 4: Have the Jammu-based parties like the BJP, the NPP and the JSM identified those responsible for the miserable plight, neglect and marginalization of the people of Jammu province? The answer seems to be in the affirmative when viewed in the light of what the MLAs of these three parties did on Tuesday on the floor of the assembly while demanding constitution of delimitation commission charged with the responsibility of delimiting assembly segments de novo. They have identified the real culprit and it is, according to them, the Congress party. Indeed, they have identified the sinner. It was perhaps for the first time that the BJP, the NPP and the JSM MLAs were not that sharp in their attack on the Kashmir-based parties, including the ruling NC, notwithstanding the fact that they also accused the state government of playing a foul game by not constituting delimitation commission to met the age-old demand of the people of Jammu province. Their target this time was basically the Congress party and for right reasons. What exactly did the BJP, the NPP and the JSM MLAs did in the assembly yesterday? One of the NPP MLAs called the Congress's bluff and asked its leadership why did it not honour the promise it solemnly made in its 2008 election manifesto that it would set up delimitation commission, if voted to power? He attacked the Congress from right and left and virtually said that it has ditched the people of Jammu province by not initiating any action in this regard even after the formation of the coalition government 39 months ago. "In its election manifesto the Congress party had promised to set up delimitation commission to delimit the assembly constituencies but even after three and half years of formation of government no step has been initiated in this regard…The Congress should tell the people of Jammu province as to why it has failed to translate its commitment made in the election manifesto into reality", he said and added that the people would not forgive the Congress party. The attack of the JSM and BJP MLAs on the Congress was no less scathing. Lambasting the Congress, they asked: "Why is the Congress silent on this issue and why has it ignored the issue during the past three and half years". The Congress just cannot afford to overlook the change in the strategy of the Jammu-based parties towards it. Instead, it should take cognizance of this change and make the government set-in-motion the process leading up to delimitation of assembly constituencies to the satisfaction of the people of Jammu province. It is part of the government. The Congress can make the NC yield because the latter cannot remain in power even for a day without the support of the former. As for the BJP, the NPP and the JSM MLAs, they need to maintain pressure on the Congress leadership. Their target should be Congress and not any of the Kashmir-based parties because it is the Congress that has destroyed Jammu province politically, socially and economically. The Congress has already become very weak across the country. The Congress high command consisting of Sonia Gandhi, Rahul Gandhi, Priyanka Gandhi and Robert Vadra has also lost its sheen and appeal. Hence, it is the most opportune moment for the BJP, the NPP and the JSM to strike and force the Congress to see reason and honour all the commitments it made in 2008, including the commitment that it would set up regional council for Jammu province by amending the State Constitution. The iron is hot, strike.
