Within 3 years PDP grows in size, stature on the ashes of Cong, NC, BJP in Jammu region

Early Times Report
Jammu,Apr 4: Even the PDP patron, Mufti Mohd.Sayeed, would have not imagined that within a span of three years his party, which was as good as an untouchable for majority of people in the Jammu region in 2008,would assume so much political weight, strength and stature that it can measure swords with the National Conference and the Congress in various segments of the region of Jammu.
What triggered loss of face for the PDP in the Jammu region in early 2008 was its stout opposition to the diversion of land to the Amarnath Shrine Board. Though the stand that the Muftis took on the issue helped the PDP to win 19 Assembly seats in the Kashmir valley against two in the Jammu region, Mendhar and Darhal,in 2008 poll it had weakened its hold on people in the Jammu region. The impact of the Amarnath land row was so severe that some of the staunch supporters of Mufti Sayeed, including a former Minister,Manjit Singh, severed ties with the PDP.
If one takes into account the transformation that greeted the PDP in the Jammu region during the last three years one may have no hesitation in blaming growing erosion in the Congress and the National Conference for the resurrection of the PDP in the Jammu region which has been as good as an alien land for the Muftis.
Talking mathematically growing loss to the Congress and the National Conference has increased PDP gains in the Jammu region. Surprisingly a large number of political activists, businessmen, prominent women and a number of Sikhs and Pandits have joined the PDP,known for being Kashmir centric, after having been disillusioned with the poor performance of the NC led coalition Government.
The role of the Muftis, besides several senior PDP leaders, including Muzaffar Hussain Beig,Molvi Iftikhar Hussain Ansari,Nizam-ud-Din Bhat,Mohd.Dilawar Mir,in highlighting peoples' problems on the floor of the state legislature and outside has created an environment in which people have started treating the PDP leadership as their saviour.
The way the Muftis have been voicing their views on various political and financial issues has motivated Chief Minister,Omar Abdullah,to attempt at hijacking the PDP agenda, especially the one connected with the withdrawal of the AFSPA and the troops and on its empahsis on resumption of centre-separatists dialogue and sustaining Indo-Pak talks for resolving various bilateral problems including the Kashmir issue.
During the last six months the Muftis and their senior party leaders have been quite active in the mass contact programme in various areas of the Jammu region. The Muftis draw bigger crowds to their rallies when compared to the public meetings held by the Congress or the National Conference in the Jammu region.
The 2008 Assembly poll helped the PDP,which has taken birth in July 1999 thus becoming the youngest political party when compared to the Congress, the National Conference and the BJP,to win 21 seats against 16 in 2002 elections. It indicates the PDP is on the move and if further evidence was needed one should refer to its good performance in the 2011 Panchayat elections.
And if the Congress, the NC and the BJP have any threat in the Jammu region it is from the PDP which is no longer a "touch-me-not"organisation for the people of the region.
Omar Abdullah may have no proof for charging the Muftis for having wooed Jammuites after having thrown sumptuous dinners and luncheons for them. Earlier Omar had blamed himself for poor media management because h had not been able to follow Mufti Sayeed in his art of wooing people of the fourth estate by organising dinners and luncheons for them.
