JAMMU, Apr 5: Winning a record six medals, including two silver, women boxers brought laurels to the Jammu and Kashmir Police through their scintillating performance in the recently held 60th All India Police Games hosted by Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) at New Delhi. However, in other three events of wrestling (men), judo (men) and weightlifting (men and women), J&K Police did well but could not make it to the medals tally. In boxing, Khalida Bano, who contested in 85 kg category, reached the final and lost the bout to her superior pugilist only in the fourth round with final score being 12-11.
In the heavy weight category, last year's all round best athlete in inter-zone competition of J&K Police, Asha Rani also lost in the final to bag a silver medal. In men's boxing event, two boxers, Sarfraz and Raman lost in the quarterfinals round while another promising Joginder Singh from Poonch was disqualified.
Losing in the semifinals stages, Stanzin, Priyanka Devi, Nisha Rani and Shabnam Zora had to contain with bronze medals. On the other hand, male boxers could not do well though they won first and second round bouts.
"In wrestling, we could not win medals but performed well. Wrestlers, Benia Min, Roshan, Pawan and Anil Kumar made their presence felt to the opponents from tough sides of BSF, CISF and CRPF," disclosed Sports Officer of J&K Police, Jameel Anjum.
In women's weightlifting and men's judo events, J&K Police fielded its athletes for the first time. "A good number of young boys and girls were given a chance this time, especially in boxing, judo and weightlifting so as to expose them to the competition at the national level. It will take these athletes three to four years to groom as medal winners," said Sports Officer. Meanwhile, Additional Director General of Police, Armed and Law and Order, K Rajendra Kumar expressed his satisfaction over performance of the police contingent, especially in boxing and wrestling events.
