JAMMU, Apr 5: Jammu is situated in the foothills of mighty Himalayas and it was named after its discoverer Raja Jambulochan, who decided to build a city during one of his hunting trip.
He saw a tiger and a goat drinking water from a common place in Tawi River. He was surprised to see this unusual sight and decided to build a city here where there was no enmity between the living creatures.
Jammu gives the ambiance of a holy and a peaceful city. People over here are devouts and inclined towards religion from ancient times. Moreover, true to its antiquity and vintage there are legends galore that accompany every edifice, ritual, tradition or festival that abound here. Besides its scenic and architectural beauty, the culture of Jammu is no less interesting. The city of temples is adding more and more of temples day by day. Even if you splash in your eyes around you will see a temple being situated even in the nook and corner of the city. This shows how religious people are Jammuites. "Earlier it was just a simple tree, which was later transformed into a full- fledged temple with god and goddess statues in it, people starting visiting the place frequently and even a pujari was appointed for the temple. Because of the people funding the temple got its flooring cemented and tiled near the Ranbir canal receiving water from Chenab river", said Girdhari Lal Sharma, a common visitor to the temple located in Shakti Nagar.
Rashmi Gupta, a morning walker said," There are many small temples being made on the sides of walking path where people usually come and offer prayers and milk into the holes of snakes worshiped in name of Lord Vishnu." Jammu is said to have remained an abode for various religious people who have been enriching it by the unique and distinctive culture. Even if you go to the remote areas of the city and the distinct hamlets even there you might find glimpses of such traditions there as well. The three major rivers of the regions Ujh, Tawi and Chenab make Jammu more holy and attract people towards it's own culture and traditions.
