Fate of delimitation, BJP rebels remain in cold storage | Budget session ends | | Early Times Report Jammu, Apr 5: Till Wednesday, when the Speaker, Mohd Akbar Lone, announced the adjournment of the Assembly sine die, senior political leaders had expected the legislature to resolve various issues including the demand for fresh delimitation of the Assembly segments and the other connected with the fate of those seven BJP MLAs who have been suspended from the party on alleged charges of having indulged in cross voting the Legislative Council election last year. Those who had expected the Assembly to settle these issues were seemingly disappointed after the House was adjourned sine die indicating that at least for another four months these issues were to remain in the cold storage. Working chairman Panthers Party, Harsh Dev Singh, said that as was expected the three main political parties, the Congress, the National Conference and the PDP, adopted a passive stand when is party members and others emphasised the need for fresh delimitation of the Assembly segments. He said that for clearing decks for the setting up a new delimitation commission the state constitution had to be amended because the existing provision in the constitution provides for fresh delimitation in 2026. Harsh Dev Singh said that for securing constitutional amendment it was necessary that the amendment bill received a support from a two-third members of the House which was possible only when the PDP, NC and the Congress members voted for the amendment. He and senior BJP leaders, including Ashok Khajuria, said that inordinate delay in carrying out fresh delimitation of Assembly segments had been one of the major factors responsible for continued discrimination of the region of Jammu. They wanted the Jammu region to have as many Assembly segments as there are in the Kashmir valley though on the basis of population and area the region of Jammu deserved to have more than 49 Assembly constituencies. Khajuria suggested to the Assembly speaker, Lone that he took cognisance of the report from the BJP legislature party leader Jugal Kishore on the issue pertaining to seven BJP MLAs suspended from the party. He said Lone has the powers to settle the issue without the House being in session. |
