Early Times Report

SRINAGAR, Apr 5 : Known for its dense lpines and vast green meadows, the world famous tourist spot 'Aru' 12 kms from Pahalgam is fast loosing its charm and sheen as the locals allegedly in nexus with the forest officials are mercilessly chopping off the alpines.A huge chunk of the forest has been rendered bare as dozens of alpine trees have either been chopped off or have dried up. The plunder of the trees is visible half a kilometer from the habitation. "The locals keep on damaging the ecology of this scenic spot under the nose of the forest and wild life officials," said a nomad who migrates to Aru during summer every year. Dozens of green alpines could also be seen with their bark removed. "The locals here have adopted a novel method to plunder the nature. They first remove the bark of the green alpines after which they dry up and ultimately fall down. Once the tree falls down the locals go and cut it down into small logs," said a resident expressing concern over the damage to the environment. The locals, sources said, with the patronage of the concerned officials also loot all the trees which fall due to the strong winds. Sanjay, a tourist from Madras is pained to see the plunder of trees.
"What do you do. Is not the damage to these green dense forests your concern. Are not the local authorities doing anything to stop it" he asked. This nexus between the locals and officials not only causes damage to the forests, it also endangers the wild life. When contacted, Wild Life Warden, Anantnag, Mohammad Sadiq, said, " I don't think there is such a huge damage to the trees. There may be damage but is negligible. The locals some times remove the bark of fallen trees." He said that he will look into the matter and ensure that no damage is caused to the wild life.
