Equipments allegedly purchased at exorbitant rates for Jammu, Srinagar dental colleges | | | Asif Iqbal Naik JAMMU, April 5: Several equipments were alleged to have been purchased at exorbitant rates by the authorities concerned for the dental colleges of Jammu and Srinagar. Going by the number of equipments purchased and the details made available by official sources to Early Times in this regard, the alleged scam runs into crores of rupees. The machinery and other items were purchased for the two dental colleges allegedly at much higher and unreasonable rates by the authorities by misusing their official position, the sources added. Early Times has documents, including the payment receipts of various equipments including Digital Panoramic x-ray unit and Complete Vertical Back Sterilization System. The panoramic x-ray machine was purchased at a cost of Rs 46,80,000, including taxes, from Villa India. After verification from the company, it was found that the x-ray unit cost Rs 19,00,000 lakh only which meant the authorities allegedly paid over Rs 27 lakh more for its purchase. Similarly, the Complete Vertical Back Sterilization System, which was available at a price of Rs 5 lakh per unit from the same company, was purchased at a cost of Rs 12,07,500 including taxes. An extra amount of over Rs 7 lakh was allegedly paid against its purchase, sources said. About eight such systems were purchased by Srinagar dental college from Villa India, while seven were purchased by Jammu dental college at the same price. In total, 15 such systems had been purchased by the two dental colleges allegedly at an extra cost of Rs 1,06,12,500, the sources added. As per the documents available with Early Times, the order of purchase was verified by Dr Shabir Ahmed Shah, Dr Syed Zameer, Dr Hamid Qureshi and Dr Suhail Majid Jan in pursuance of the principal/dean letter No GDC/Par/3034-35 followed by the verification board and opinion from the expert. The store incharge confirmed that the purchased material was received in full against order No GDC/Par/504-07. It was not only the team of four doctors which verified the purchase bills, even senior officials of the dental colleges authenticated the bills by putting their signatures on them. The documents also stated that the purchase was made after the satisfactory report issued by the expert of GMC, Srinagar, vide letter No RD 200-02/2009. When some senior officials of the two dental colleges were contacted for comments, they preferred to keep mum. |
