| Gallantry and distinguished services awards for army personnel announced | | The PVSM awardee’s who hails from Jammu include Lt Gen Daljeet Singh, Lt Gen Arvind Mahajan, and Lt Gen LP Sadhotra. | | Jammu, Jan 25 Four army officers have been awarded the prestigious Kirti Chakra, all posthumously, by the President of India. These are Col GS Sarna, Maj MH Pitambare, Capt Vishal Bhandral and Lt Natrajan Parthiban. All these officers are from the Infantry. In addition, Hav Manjit Singh has also been awarded the Kirti Chakra. Col GS Sarna from the Grenadiers Regiment was commanding 29th battalion of Rashtriya Rifles. He was martyred in a heroic action fighting the militants in Baramulla District of J&K in December 2006. His family resides in New Delhi. Maj MH Pitambare a paratrooper from the Special Forces, lost his life fighting militants in Bijbehara District of J&K in Nov 2006. He belonged to Chandanwadi area of Thane. Capt Vishal Bhandral from the Garhwal Rifles was posted in Rashtriya Rifles battalion. This officer was martyred in heroic action against militants in September 2006, near Bandipura in Baramulla District. He was injured earlier during a counter insurgency operation in Assam. Capt Bhandral was a bachelor and belonged to Vikaspuri in New Delhi. His father Shri DC Bhandaral works for Bank of Baroda. Lt N Parthiban of Jammu & Kashmir Light Infantry was martyred in an encounter with militants along the Line of Control in J &K in Oct 2006. He is the son of an army veteran, Major V Natarajan. He hailed from Chennai. As for other gallantry awards, 25 other Army personnel have been awarded Shaurya Chakra, 11 of them posthumously. 77 army personnel have been awarded Sena Medals, 11 of which have been awarded the same posthumously. Of these four of the awardees are to receive these for the second time. One of the posthumous awardees is Maj Shyam Sundar of the Madras Regiment who was killed while providing help and rescuing his comrade-in-arms, who was shot by the militants in J&K. He belonged to Chennai. As in the past few years, personnel from The Rashtriya Rifles have won a large number of gallantry awards (including its Director General for distinguished services), said a PIB (Defence Wing) release. As for awards for distinguished services, 19 senior Army officers have been awarded Param Vishisht Seva Medals. Some of these are Lt Gen Deepak Kapoor, Army’s Vice Chief, Lt Gen Aditya Singh, Southern Army Commander, Lt Gen Daljeet Singh, Western Army Commander, Lt Gen Chander Bhan Vijan, Deputy Chief of Integrated Defence Staff, Lt Gen Mohan Pande, DG Military Operations, Lt Gen AK Saini, DG Rashtriya Rifles, Lt Gen DDS Sandhu DG Ordnance Services, Lt Gen Arvind Mahajan DG Electronics and Mechanical Engineers, Lt Gen Utpal Bhattacharya DG Manpower, Lt Gen LP Sadhotra, DG Medical Services and Lt Gen Paramjit Singh, DG Dental Services. In addition, 33 Ati Vishst Seva Medals (one for the second time, to Lt Gen SS Dhillon, MGO at the Army HQ) and 77 Vishisht Seva Medals (four for the second time) have also been announced. Lt Gen ML Naidu, Army Commander of Training Command at Shimla has been awarded an Ati Vishisht Seva Medal. 41 personnel have been awarded Sena Medal for distinguished services. |
