Jammu Apr 6: Despite the directives of the Government the filling of water bodies goes unabated in Pattan and its surrounding areas in Kashmir valley. The land mafia having full patronage of revenue officials have not stopped the filling of marshy land in Pattan and its surrounding areas
According to the sources, a gang of land mafia is involved in filling of marshy land in the three districts of Kashmir including Pattan in Barramulla ,Narbal in Srinagar and tarzoo in Baramulla and thousands of canals of marshy land has been illegally turned into commercial and residential areas. Sources said that filling of marshy land areas continues in these areas and the directives of the government given to the Divisional Kashmir have not been carried out as the land mafia is fully in league with revenue authorities
Sources said that score of trucks with clay were laid in marshy land surrounding Pattan even yesterday despite the fact that revenue minister Raman Bhalla has taken serious cognizance of the same. sources said that it is not for the first time that thousands of canals of land has been covered in Kashmir valley which was a home for migratory birds. These water bodies were functional in the valley for years together but now they have been turned into residential complexes or commercial complexes especially in the area surrounding the Srinagar city, but till date the Government has failed to act ,said Abdul Salam ,a resident of Pattan .
It may be recalled that the matter was raised in the state legislative assembly when on April 3 when PDP leader Iftikar Hussain Ansari raised the issue and said that 500 km of land in Pattan and surrounding areas has been encroached by the land mafia. He said that the filling of the land goes unabated though the speaker passed directives to the government to act against land mafia ad revenue minister Raman Bhalla passed immediate directives to the Divisional commissioner Kashmir to take immediate action against the land mafia and stop the filling. However next day Moulvi Iftikar informed the house that filling of land still continues and 170 tippers were filled on that day too up to 4 PM,
The speaker constituted four member house committee comprising of G.A Mir of Congress ,Mir Shafiulah and Nazir Gurezi of NC and Bashrat Bukhari of PDP to visit the area and to probe. He also urged the committee to submit the report within 15 days to the house. However sources said that despite all this the filling of land continues in the area
