Alarming decrease in water table with onset of summer
4/7/2012 11:03:31 PM
Sumit Bhargav
RAJOURI, Apr 7: With the onset of summer and lack of normal rainfall has led to alarming decrease in ground water table resulting shrinking of natural water sources in Rajouri.
In several parts of Rajouri district the mechanism of PHE water supply is either lying defunct or is not up to the mark and now shrinking of natural water sources has started to set panic among locals. Shrinking of these water sources has not only worried people who are dependent upon these for availability of water but concerned departments are also well aware of the situation but no one is desirous to take any step to tackle water shortage situation. Hotter belts of district like Muradpur, Thandikassi, Mankote, Batkhalara and several others are especially those which are facing this problem alarmingly and shrinking of natural water sources in these areas require special attention so as to tackle any major problem or acute shortage of water in near future. Experts are attributing two major reasons for shrinkage of water sources. The first and major cause of depleting of water level is lack of proper rainfall. From past about one and a half month only two or three times, minor rainfall has been reported which is insufficient to recharge ground water table. Such an acute minor rainfall has not only led to decrease in ground water table but has also resulted dryness in atmosphere. Another major reason accounted for ground water table decrease is lack of sense towards ground water recharging techniques. Concerned authorities are neither awarding common masses and nor taking any step to recharge ground water table. Except some students no one in the area knows about water harvesting techniques. Due to decrease in ground water table natural water sources like wells, small rivers, ponds etc are shrinking and are expected to dry almost completely or completely in near future in the hot and warm months of June and July and thus it require special attention and approach of concerned agencies.
