Shutdown affects normal life in Srinagar, partial response in some parts
4/7/2012 11:05:17 PM
Bashir Assad
Srinagar, Apr 7 :The people across Kashmir valley Saturday responded partially to the strike call given by hard-line separatist leader Sayed Ali Geelani against the two-year jail term awarded to a US based Kashmiri separatist Ghu lam Nabi Fai by a US court one week ago. Though business establishments and educational institutions remained closed in civil lines area of Srinagar city , however, shops were partially open. The strike call drew a partial response in other district headquarters and towns of the Kashmir Valley. In other suburb areas, banks, government offices and educational institutions remained opened though attendance was thin as the public transport was off the roads. Private transport and some three-wheelers plied normally on the city roads. In South Kashmir's Anantnag district quarter, government offices and educational institutions were less affected by the strike call whereas in Baramullah district in North Kashmir normal life was thrown out of gear by the strike.
It merits a mention here that several people including some policemen were injured in violent clashes which broke out in Barm aulla town on Friday soon after Sayed Ali Geelani addressed a public rally at main chowk Baramulla after Friday prayers as groups of youth pelted stones and police fired numerous teargas shells to disperse the stone-pelting mob which attacked police station Bara mulla. Public transport and classes in the educational institutions remained suspended because of the shutdown in the town.
.Reports from other district headquarters of Baramulla, Kupwara, Ana ntnag, Pulwama, Shopian, Kulgam, Ganderbal, Bad gam and Bandipora indicated the shutdown affected normal life partially. No untoward incident has so far been reported from anywhere, police said. Police and security personnel were deployed on all important locations to avoid any protest by the separatists and armed security men were seen patrolling on city streets. Ghulam Nabi Fai was awarded a two-year prison sentence after he admitted secretly receiving millions of dollars from Pakistan and its spy service while lobbying in the United States.Fai, 62, pleaded guilty in December to conspiracy and tax violations dating back to 1990 for a scheme to conceal some 3.5 million dollars that came from Pakistan to fund his lobbying efforts over the disputed territory of Kashmir. Syed Ali Shah Geelani, had called for a complete shutdown, against the verdict.
Fai served as the executive director of the Kashmiri American Council, which described itself as a non-profit organization run by Kashmiris and funded by Americans.
But U.S. authorities have said some of the Kashmiri American Council's money came from Pakistan's intelligence service, known as the Inter-Services Intelligence Agency or ISI, and that he failed to register as an agent of a foreign government as required under U.S. law. The Pakistan Government has denied any knowledge of Fai's activities.
