Baisakhi at hand but de-sliting of canals yet to be completed

JAMMU, Apr 7: The Harvest Festival- the Baishakhi is at hand but the irrigation department and its allied agencies have failed to complete the de-silting process of various canals including the historic Ranbir Canal resulting to scarcity of water for farmers in many areas of Jammu region.
Farmers in the tail end lamented that now-a-days the season of sowing the vegetables in the rural areas but they are not getting water through the canals. "Because the cleanliness work of different canals has not been completed not yet, they rued and added that the reasons for this failure better known to the department but farming community is paying for none of its fault.
Officials sources said that the 60% people of the state are totally dependent on the agriculture whereas the canals is the life line of the farmers community, these canals cater to the irrigation facility of the large number of farmers in the Jammu region.
Moreover, it is a sowing season and in next few days farmers will be sowing seeds of vegetables and the process of de-silting has not been undertaken as a result of which the farmers have been left at the mercy of Almighty.
"Delay in timely de-silting of canals has resulted in non-availability of water for irrigation which will harm the crops", said a farmer Balwinder Singh.
Speaking on the issue Chief Engineer Irrigation, Ashwani Sharma said this year the water of canals was closed on January 18. "This is the main reason why the cleanliness work is going till date. 'Agencies involved in the cleaning cum de-silting process are at work and completed in next few weeks", Sharma said. He said that department makes a report and submits same to the concerned authorities. He informed that wherever required the department clean the canals, but for this there is no fixed time for that and if there is any it is always mentioned in the tender.
