Will they ever come back…? | | SHAFIQ MIR | 4/7/2012 11:07:57 PM |
| I love them heartedly, and there is a reason for me to love them whatever I am today I am convinced that I am a suc cessful man in my life so far . It doesn't mean that I have achieved all tops of the world but I am convinced that I can lead myself in a better way and that is the successful story of the life if one leads himself in a better way . And who gave me this skill of life was none else but a "Kashmiri Pandit" teacher . Before talking about the real subject I am going to write over, I would like to tell you that how I became able to write any thing due to which I got a status of a journalist or a writer . In 1996, I was a drop out student at college level and was a completely de tracked person . However, on the pressure of my parents I got myself again admitted in Government Degree College Rajouri . The college was then headed by a Kashmiri Pandit Dr. Kubhushan Kachru . A known strict administrator and a disciplinary person , Dr Kulbhushan Kachru had spread a terror of discipline in the institution which was against my nature . As per my nature like a naughty and irresponsible student I started my activities . I instigated the students to for an association so that the so called cruelty of principal is fought back . During this period I had some interactions with principal on various issues and he sensed something in me of which I was unaware . I remember , on day principal summoned me in his office chamber and asked me to me him after college hours . As per directions , I waited till the college hours were over and Dr Kachru came out of his chamber and pointed towards me and asked me to accompany him . Keeping his one hand at my arm, Dr Kachru started moving in the college lawns . He asked me one question that what I want to become in my life . I had no answer as I have already told you that I had never thought over this . If I would have ever thought over it the question he asked was so simple to reply that what I wanted to become in life . However, due to my activities as student leader Dr. Kachru thought that I wanted to become politician . He said, " look here my son if you want to become politician no problem it is good, but do u have ever thought that after ten or fifteen years when you will contest elections majority of your electorates will be graduate and why they will vote for an under graduate person . My suggestion is if you want to be come politician at least you complete your graduation", Dr Kachru told me in clear words and asked me to ponder over it . I think this was the turning point of my life and I started studying and I completed my graduation in his presence . I solute Dr Kachru wherever he is for making my life. This is the reason I love the community he belongs and there are hundreds in the state of Jammu and Kashmir who have similar stories to tell . No doubt, Kashmiri Pandits were the major human resource of Jammu and Kashmir educational sector and due to their migration the educational sector of the state have suffered a un -repairable loss . I don't want to discuss the circumstances in which a complete community was forced to leave their sweet homes they had built with lot of dreams and hopes . There are two types of versions about their migration . The pundit organizations say that their community migrated due to the fear of life . And the threat was posed to them by the Kashmiri militants . It is also fact that some of the Kashmiri pundits got killed by the militants . But it is also fact that thousands of Muslims also got killed by the militants . If it would have been community cleansing campaign then there was no question of killing Muslims. There is an other version that Kashmiri Pandits were forced to migrate by then governor of the state with a conspiracy . What ever the reason had been , fact is that lakhs of Kashmiri pundits or entire population of the community left their sweet homes in 1990 and are still scattered all over India in pieces . I am not much concerned about the pathetic conditions some of them are living in, I am concerned about the vanishing culture of the community. But now the question is that will they ever come back to their homes ? In search of this question , I talked to many Kashmir pandits . Most of them said no citing the security reason . Some of them expressed their willing but with the idea of separate home land in Kashmir . However, an educated Kashmiri pandit lady Sunita Koul speaks frankly and says " NO" but with sound reasons . Presently putting up in Noida and working as lecturer , Sunita Koul says that though the majority of our community members miss their home land a lot but don't want to go back . She says on one hand majority of the community members have got settled all over India and they have started their life with new hopes and promises . " Moreover, due to the migrant status we have availed an opportunity of reservations in professional institutes all over India and once we get back we will loose this opportunity", says sunita . She also agrees that the major loss this community has met with is that the culture of the community is at stake and there is no guarantee of keeping it intact with the next generation . She says that no doubt that many efforts are being made at government level to get back the Kashmiri Pandits to their homes in Jammu and Kashmir but it is all a futile exercise . " In the present situation, when the fate of Kashmir was still hanging and there was no permanent future of the state how Kashmiri pandits can take risk of getting back . |
