JU to organize national conference on climate change | | | Early Times Report Jammu, Apr 7: National Conference on climate change: Understanding the Himalayan ecology is being organized by Institute of Himalayan Glaciology, University of Jammu with Liberty Institute, New Delhi in partnership with Friedrich-Naumann-Stiftung für die Freiheit, New Delhi on April 9-10, 2012 at University of Jammu. The inaugural function of the conference shall be on April 9 at 10 am at Seminar Hall, Department of Computer Science, University of Jammu whereas the Technical Sessions shall be held at the Seminar Hall of Department of Environmental Sciences, University of Jammu immediately after the inauguration session. Nawang Rigzin Jora, Minister of Tourism and Culture, shall be the chief guest on the inaugural function and Prof. M.P. Singh Ishar , Vice Chancellor, University of Jammu shall preside over the function. Besides undertaking intensive and extensive study of glaciers in NW Himalaya, the Institute of Himalayan Glaciology, University of Jammu has been organizing conferences on the themes of climate change to educate and up-date the knowledge of society at large. The issue of climate change is a subject of discussion all around and the Institute of Himalayan Glaciology has been actively participating at various forums with in and out of India to project their contributions in this field of science. The present conference is an effort to invite some of the well known social and natural scientists from India who shall be talking on the science, polity and socio-economic aspects of climate change. The issue of climate change is not the domain of scientists alone but also of the common man who shall be equally affected of change in climate. The organizers of the conference therefore extend welcome to the citizens of Jammu to attend the technical sessions and participate in the discussion. The objective of this conference is to assess the status of the biophysical resources in the Himalayan mountain region according to the latest findings. The conference provides a platform for discussion on the appropriate strategies for environmental management from a multidisciplinary perspective, recognizing the fact that environmental research remains sensitive to political, economic and cultural ethos. |
