Rigid stand on Hafiz Saeed can rupture Indo-Pak talks | | | It is no less than a quotable quote when Pakistan Prime Minister, Yousuf Raza Gilani, said the other day that alleged involvement of Jamat-ud-Dawa Chief, Hafiz Saeed, in the Mumbai terrorist strike is "an internal matter of Pakistan. "A group of militants emanating from the soil of Pakistan launching a massive gun and grenade attack on crowded places, including posh hotels, in Mumbai (India) in 2008 in which over 170 people get killed cannot be treated an internal matter. Yes a terrorist strike by militants belonging to Pakistan on the crowded shopping centers in Karachi or outside a shrine in Lahore can be definitely treated as an internal matter of Pakistan leaving no scope for either New Delhi or for Washington to seek action against the terrorists. Gilani has voiced this opinion when on one hand Washington announced a heft award for those giving information about Saeed that can lead to his arrest and on the other New Delhi submitted fresh evidence on Saeed's involvement in the Mumbai terrorist strike. If Hafiz Saeed is the founder of the dreaded Lashkar-i-Toiba it is again an internal matter of Pakistan when both Washington and New Delhi have banned this outfit. In fact during the last three years India has been pleading for severe action against the perpetrators of the Mumbai carnage and it has named Hafiz Saeed as the brain behind the mayhem. Initially Islamabad wan-ted proof from New Delhi in support of its claim and Saeed and his associates had engineered the Mumbai strike and when various documents, supporting New Delhi's charge, were submitted to Islamabad Pakistan announced that its courts had not found the evidence sufficient for proceeding against Saeed and others. Islamabad knows it that if New Delhi suspended the process of dialogue aimed at confidence building measures an at reduction of trust deficit it was only the result of Pakistan backed terrorist strike in Mumbai. Possibly Islamabad is under an illusion that if New Delhi agreed to resume the process of dialogue it had done so under internal pressure and under the goading from Washington. India has always been in favour of peace and cordial ties with its neighbours and even in the face of intermittent provocations from Beijing India has been quite sincere in building bridges with China. Even in politics and political intrigues there is a limit. If Pakistan continues to provide safe shelter to terrorists, extremists and anti-India elements it cannot expect India to be a passive spectator. Isla-mabad is again under an illusion that by having forged all weather ties, including military agreement, with China it can measure swords with India. Pakistan needs to realise that even Beijing has become wary of the Pak machinations in Xinxiang province where terrorists, trained in Pakistan, have started indulging in subversive violence. And unlike New Delhi Beijing has started hitting hard at these terrorists. If people like Gilani address Seed as "Jenab Hafiz Saeed sahib"the ongoing dialogue process with India may suffer rupture anytime. Now hope rests on Asif Ali Zardari who is India. |
