Kashmiri Hindus to hold protest march for passage of Temple and Shrine Bill
4/9/2012 12:06:31 AM
Early Times Report

Jammu, Apr 8:Kashmiri Pandits under the aegis of Prem Nath Bhat Memorial Trust, the nodal KP organization spearheading the movement for passage of Kashmiri Hindu Temples and Shrines preservation bill, decided to hold a protest march, on 15th April 2012 at 3 pm from KP Sabha to the governor house to protest against the delay in passing the Bill. In a meeting held at Swami Atma Ramji Ashram Gosain Gund campus at Laxmivihar Bohri, the action group of the trust noted that despite positive feelers from the government and assurance from the responsible ministers in the state cabinet that the bill shall be passed in the current session, the bill was not made into law. The members of the extended group, representing all the districts of the valley who attended this meeting noted that the non-passage of the bill has left the 1200 and more religious places, temples, shrines and Asthapans in the valley open to the ongoing illegal occupation, loot and vandalisaiton. A recent example of which has been the illegal sale of the most ancient Veetaal Bhairav asthapan at Motiyar, Rainawari.
Though the felling of trees was stopped at the last moment through government intervention the attempt to desecrate one of the most hoary religious places of Kashmir has alarmed the community. The threat looming over these ancient and sacred shrines and asthapans has become very acute.
Every delay in the passage of the bill is becoming a heaven-sent opportunity for the vandalisation of the ancient shrines by the land mafia and black sheep.
It may be mentioned here that the bill listed as bill no 2 of 2009 before the state legislature has been lying in limbo for the last three years. Various delegations of the trust who met more than a dozen important members of the state cabinet and political leaders had been given unconditional support and assurance for the passage of the bill during the current session of the legislature.
The committee warned the government against succumbing to pressure of individual exploiters, vested interests and land mafia, who are said to have been lobbying to delay the bill to carry out their nefarious designs on the temple properties and religious lands.
