ULB Polls: Cong not prepared, ministers conveyed to Azad | PDP instead of BJP a real threat to party prospects……? | | early times report Jammu, Apr 8: Contrary to its own claims made on the floor of the Upper House on Apr 4 that elections to the Urban Local Bodies will be completed by the end of April 2012, two days later the NC led coalition ruled out the same attributing postponement to delay in preparation of draft electoral rolls and other formalities for conducting polls. This may be the procedural reason but there is actually political side of the story for delaying the polls. Congress, the main alliance partner in ruling coalition is not interested in ULB polls to be held at this juncture. Party sources said that Congress on account of its loose and infirm political ground and shaky situation in many areas in both the capital cities is not interested that polls be held as early as this month end. The ministers have conveyed it to Union Health Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad that polls if held at this juncture would not yield desired results as the party managed in Panchayat polls last year. Almost all the ministers during Azad's recent visit to Jammu conveyed this 'reality' to former chief minister whose say matters in J&K affairs and party decisions in New Delhi, sources said adding that most of the ministers have also contended that political preparations with respect to ensuring better prospects for the party were yet to start . Since the ULB elections are believed to be conducted by the
government on party basis contrary to Panchayat polls which were held on non party basis, Congress wants to have its firm grip on all political preparedness much ahead of polls. As the government and entire cabinet members of Congress were busy with the Budget session of legislature which concluded last week, none of them have been able to take a review of the position on the ground level, sources said. However, what has unnerved the Congress this time , apart from its main political rival is the PDP's gaining popularity in Jammu which may eat into certain pockets of Congress in Jammu, cutting its prospects at ward level contests. Sources said while Congress sees not much of the completion from its traditional rival BJP, which too is facing serious organizational level problems at this juncture, it has started taking PDP's position as serious challenge in the merging political scenario where PDP high command including patron Mufti Mohammad Sayeed and his daughter president of the party mehbooba Mufti has been able to make inroads into such pockets of Jammu where Congress had not imagined its outreach. Sources also said Ghulam Nabi Azad's uttering against PDP in the public rally on Apr 1 is being seen as consequence of PDP's much better position in Jammu . Azad by raking up the matters that were buried over four years back, sources said were aimed at damaging PDP 's growing image in Jammu. It is not only at the level Azad, many ministers and senior leaders have lately starting speaking against PDP , instead of directly attacking BJP for all wrongs and misleading the electorate of Jammu.
