Ranbir canal closed again after releasing water for 2 days | | | early times report JAMMU, Apr 8: With Government's failure to keep its promise to release the water in Ranbir canal in first week of April, there is a brewing resentment among the farmers who are totally dependent on the canal for irrigation of their fields and they have warned to come to streets in case releasing the water into the canal was further delayed. The Government has given assurance on the floor of the Assembly that Ranbir Canal will be made functional within days but after opening its gates to release water in it two days back the canal was again closed by the Irrigation Department for unknown reasons, said Rangil Singh a farmer from Mishriwala. He said the farmers upto R S Pura are totally dependent on this canal for irrigation of their fields and closing the canal for over three months during the Rabi season has generated a resentment among the farmers as it delayed the sowing of crops. Had the canal been closed for 20 to 30 days of January, the farmers would have been able to sow the vegetables in time and there would have not been dearth of local vegetables in Jammu, he added. He said the Government was playing truant with farmers and it was ignoring their plight and problems deliberately. Knowing fully that Rabir Canal is life line of Jammu farmers it has failed to keep the canal functional during the winter season, he alleged. He said the farmers are unable to sow seeds due to lack of irrigation facilities and further delay in releasing the water in the canal will compound their problems. The farmers have also taken the Government to task for not cleaning the canal properly and alleged that the mulba and muck deposits lie in the canal at various places still. This will impede the flow of water to the tail resulting in problems to the farmers at tail end, said Mohan Khullar another farmer from Marh. Meanwhile BJP Kissan Morcha led by Karan Singh its state president today protested at Mishriwala for closure of canal by the Irrigation Department after releasing water into it for two days. The protestors warned the authorities that farmers will come to streets and launch a massive agitation if the further delay was made in releasing the water into the Ranbir Canal. Morcha president Karan Singh said that later a delegation also met the concerned Executive Engineer and urged him that water be immediately released into the canal as closing the canal has generated a resentment among the farmers of the state. He said earlier the Executive Engineer had refused to release the water and then agreed that only two feet water will be released in the canal. But Morcha protested against the same saying that this will not solve the problem and forced authorities to release at least six feet water in the canal which they agreed. Singh said that in future the canal should not be closed for more than a month in Winter Season so that the farmers are not put to problems in sowing the seeds during Rabi season. |
