Pathania rues discrimination, police high handedness
'Jobs for stone-pelters, criminal action against SPOs'

early times report
Ramnagar, Apr 8: While accusing the Police authorities of acting with too high a hand and indulging in worst discrimination, R S Pathania, a congress leader and prominent lawyer said that on one hand they are recruiting stone-pelters from Kashmir, on the other they are disengaging SPOs who raised their voice merely for regularization of their services. The police-recruits from Kashmir who raised pro-Pakistan slogans in PTS Kathua were never touched. But those patriotic SPOs from Ramnagar who have lost their lives and limbs while fighting insurgency and are now demanding decent wages are being silenced by disengagement orders and criminal cases. It is pertinent to mention here that about 100-odd SPOs had went on strike in Ramnagar and Police had defused the strike on the promise that their genuine demands shall be redressed to. But once the strike was called off by SPOs, Police has disngaged them and slapped criminal cases against them. Since the induction of SPOs in Police force as well as in Village Defence Committees and Dhok Defence Comm-ittees, they have virtually become its very backbone by sustaining militancy operations and looking after law and order and routine activities of police force. But they are being made to work on a paltry wages of Rs. 3100.00 per month, a wage lesser than the 'minimum wage' as stipulated by Minimum Wages Act. Fact remains that an SPO is doing the same work as is being done by a regular Police constable. But SPOs are paid 60 time lesser than a constable with no earned leave, ration money, pension, medical allowance, insurance cover, SRO-43. In the interest of the poor, brave SPOs, the greater interest of the morale of nationalist forces and the greatest interest of the nation and society at large, a comprehensive regularization/absorption policy for the protesting SPOs needs to be unfolded whereby the physically fit and matriculate SPOs should be absorbed as regular constables and the under-matric and under-height ones should be made as followers.
