VHP to hold statewide protests on Apr 16 against reduction of Amarnath yatra period | | | Early Times Report JAMMU, Apr 9: VHP today said its cadres would hold statewide protests on April 16 next against the decision of governor N N Vohra to reduce the period of Shree Amarnath yatra to 39 days. Taling to media persons here, VHP state president Ramakant Dubey said they would oppose tooth and nail Vohra's decision to reduce yetra period to mere 39 days. Vohra is chairman of Shree Amarnath Shrine Board (SASB) which conducts annual pilgrimage to the holy cave shrine of Lord Shiva in south Kashmir Himalayas. Dubey said SASB had announced to start the yatra from June 25, reducing it by 21 days. Instead of June 25, the yatra would start on Jyeshth Purnima, which falls on June 4, and end on Raksha Bandan in August, he asserted. Dubey said VHP had already started its Shiv Bhagat Bharti Abhiyan from April 6 and held various programs to ask people to get themselves registered for saving Amarnath yatra and simultaneously mobalise people for visiting Amarnath shrine from Jyeshth Purnima. The state VHP would hold dharnas and protests at district and tehsil level on April 16 if the governor did not withdraw his decision of starting the yatra from June 25. He hoped that union home minister P Chidambaram, during his forthcoming visit to the state, would not accede to the demand of chief minister Omar Abdullah for revocation of AFSPA from the state as the terrorist threat from across the border was yet not over. |
