Security experts seek demilitarization of Siachen glacier | | | EARLY TIMES REPORT JAMMU, Apr 9: Experts in the Army and the police favour immediate demilitarization of the 64-km long Siachen glacier in eastern Ladakh which has become the world's highest battlefield since 1984 when the Indian and the Pakistani troops got engaged in first fierce armed conflict. The demand for demilitarization of the mountain glacier of Siachen, where even a blade of grass does not grow, has resurfaced after over 135 Pakistani soldiers were buried under avalanches the other day. Experts said that the entire mountain glacier area is avalanche prone belt and in the past a number of soldiers on the Indian side and on the other side too were buried under the avalanches or were swept by the avalanches. They said that such causalities could be checked if the mountain glacier was demilitarized after India and Pakistan resolve the dispute amicably. They said besides great human loss maintaining troops on the 19000 ft high mountain glacier has caused economic bleed to India and Pakistan. However, political leaders belonging to the Congress, the Panthers Party and the BJP have blamed Pakistan for having turned down India's plea for resolving the dispute through process of dialogue. Working chairman Panthers Party, Harsh Dev Singh, said that it was unfortunate that whenever New Delhi suggested measures for demilitarization off Siachen glacier or for resolving the dispute Islamabad would link the glacier dispute with the Kashmir issue. |
