`In 2002 Farooq sought PM's support to form Govt' | NC's lust for power | | Asif Iqbal Naik JAMMU, Apr 9: A belated disclosure about Dr Farooq's desire to form government in 2002 with the tacit support of some PDP MLAs reflects the party's `desperation to stay in power. According to informed sources, Dr Farooq sought help from former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee to form a government in 2002 when the party strength in the assembly was reduced to 28 seats. Farooq, sources said approached Vajpayee to keep Mufti out of power. "He even claimed support of some PDP MLAs. However, Vajpayee cautioned Mufti about the possible horse trading", they said. The former Chief Minister also requested Vajpayee to instruct the governor to take measures in this regard, sources said. The sources added that Vajpayee while rejecting the demand told Farooq to prove his majority by lawful means. "I do not believe in horse trading", he told Farooq. Contesting Farooq's claims about Haji Yusuf being a member of the PDP, the sources said why did he (Farooq) allowed him to come so close to the sheikh family. According to sources, Mufti Sayed also met Vajpayee to express his apprehensions about possible rigging by the National Conference workers. The sources said that Vajpayee assured Mufti Mohammad Syed of free and fair elections in Jammu and Kashmir which he (Vajpayee) later also announced in various public addresses. The sources said that soon after Mufti Mohammad Syed took over the reign of state, Vajpayee cautioned him (Mufti) about the duel standard of some of his party MLA’s during the sideline of a meeting in Delhi. However Dr. Farooq Abdullah in his recent statement claimed Yusuf had approached him with the support of 18 MLA's soon after they lost power in the state in 2002. "I made him clear that I do not believe in Aya Ram Gaya Ram and would not indulge in these practices in future as well." Dr. Abdullah said in Jammu on Saturday. Even though Dr. Farooq Abdullah tried to distance himself from Haji Yousaf controversy, but several photographs showing Dr. Farooq Abdullah and Chief Minister Omar Abdullah rubbing shoulders with the deceased in public narrate the story of their relationship. |
