Early Times Report
Srinagar, Apr 10 : With the arrest of three people, the Jammu and Kashmir police claimed to have busted a gang of drug peddlers. Among the three, one has connection with with the Lashkar-e-Tayyeba (LeT).
A woman drug peddler was also among the trio. According to a police statement issued
by Srinagar's police headquarters, the Kulgam police and the Sopore police arrested the three persons. The date and place of the arrest was not disclosed by the police spokesman. "Among the three, one is LeT over-ground worker in Sopore. Three kilos of charas (marijuana) were recovered from them," said the spokesman. The police claimed the LeT would drug stone-throwers in hardline Hurriyat chairman Syed Ali Shah Geelani's bastion Sopore, 55 km north of Srinagar.
The police identified the arrested as Firdous Ahmad Gazi, a resident of Khushhalmatu, Sopore; Ghulam Mohammed Sheikh, a resident of Shahbad, Sopore; and Rafiqa, a resident of Guree, Bijbehara in south Kashmir.
The police said Gazi was booked twice under the Public Safety Act in the past for indulging in stone pelting. "Gazi was also working as an over-hround worker for the LeT outfit," said the police.
According to the spokesman, Rafiqa would ferry the narcotic substances from Bijbehara to Sopore and hand it over to Gazi. "Gazi who along with another accused Ghulam Mohammed Sheikh would distribute it to youth, mostly boys involved in stone pelting," alleged the spokesman. The family members of the arrested persons could not be contacted to confirm the police charges leveled against them.
