National Conference or Abdullahs' Conference | Sham Democracy | | Rustam Jammu, Apr 10: Last Friday (April 6) NC president Farooq Abdullah appointed Chief Minister Omar Abdullah working president of the party saying that he didn't have sufficient time at his disposal to look after the party affairs in the state. "I do not get time to visit the state frequently in view of the fact that I am busy at the Centre as a minister. Little time is left for me. So, somebody who is active in the State should take the charge. So, Omar is made the working president," he said, thus giving the people of J&K to understand that his son, who is leading the government in the most difficult, militant and separatist-infested state, has sufficient time at his disposal to take care of the party affairs. The father gave a certificate to his son that he can not only run the state government efficiently but can also help his party consolidate its support-base and further expand its constituency. It is obvious that Farooq Abdullah did not find any person in his party, including the ideologues like Abdul Rahim Rather and Mohammad Shafi Uri, who could be charged with the responsibility of looking after the party affairs in the state. In other words, Farooq Abdullah expressed no-confidence in all the NC leaders, barring his son. It must have shocked many an NC leader. It is a different story that none has mustered courage to take on the Abdullahs who have converted the so-called National Conference into the conference of Abdullahs. But the fact of the matter is that such things have been happening ever since the 1930s when Sheikh Abdullah founded the so-called NC under his own leadership. The Abdullahs have never trusted non-Abdullahs fearing the latter could expose them and weaken their position in the state politics as well as in the New Delhi's corridors of power. The Abdullahs have never tolerated any kind of dissent. This is a fact. The expulsion of Mirza Afzal Beg from the party in the late 1970s is just one example. Beg was not an ordinary man. Farooq Abdullah not only made his son working president of the NC but he also brought back his brother and Omar Abdullah's uncle Sheikh Mustafa Kamaal as additional general secretary of the party. It was on November 10 last year that he was divested of his high profile position as the NC spokesperson-cum-additional general secretary following his highly controversial statements against the army and the Congress leaders, including AICC general secretary and Sonia Gandhi's son Rahul Gandhi. Kamaal had on November 10 lashed out at Rahul Gandhi and said that he had "no role in running the government of J&K". "Rahulji's role is to run the Congress party and not the state government. What has Rahul's happiness or unhappiness to do with the functioning of the state government," he had said reacting to JKPCC president Prof Saif-ud-Din Soz's statement that Rahul Gandhi was "not happy with the functioning of the state government". Farooq Abdullah had removed his brother unceremoniously from this position saying he had to take this "difficult decision because Kamaal had been making certain statements which were not consistent with the policies of the NC and were "against the coalition dharma". Following was the text of the statement issued by the NC media cell on action against Kamaal: "President J&K NC Dr Farooq Abdullah has asked Dr Mustafa Kamaal to resign immediately as the additional general secretary and chief spokesman of the party". By reappointing Mustafa Kamaal as additional general secretary of the party the NC president and Union Minister has only taunted the state Congress leaders, barring perhaps leaders like Taj Mohi-ud-Din. The moral of the story is that the Abdullahs would never allow any non-Abdullah to run the party affairs and it should not irritate anybody. After all, we are living in a country where almost all the political parties, barring perhaps the BJP, are run like the Abdullahs run and control. That's the reason we have in our country what we call sham democracy where people have no say whatever. |
