Delay in elections to ULBs

Early Times Report
Jammu, Apr 10: Despite tremendous pressure from almost all the political parties including its ally Congress, National Conference seems to deliberately delaying the much awaited elections to Urban Local Bodies.
Reasons: Results may not be that positive as party leadership had failed to come up to the expectations of the general public, indicates political observes.
Pertinent to mention here that chief minister Omar Abdullah had publicly committed to hold elections to Urban Local Bodies by May, current year.
"However," sources in government revealed, "observing the hectic political activities of opposition PDP, BJP and JKNPP even its ally Congress, National Conference leadership is no mood to hold early polls to civic bodies."
"NC is far behind other political parties in terms of reaching out to the urban population keeping in view the elections," further observed political observers.
"It is just a lame excuse that due to delay in preparation of draft rolls, the elections to Urban Local Bodies have been delayed. If NC is serious and committed to hold election than how can the Deputy Commissioners of various districts of the state can give priority to other issues and not adhere to the instructions of the government to prepare draft rolls," were the questions raised by local Congress leaders in front of several Congress Ministers and PCC chief Saif-ud-Din Soz, during a party rally organized at Jammu West Constituency, here on Monday.
The Congress leaders, during their respective speeches, even went ahead and urged the party high command to contest the election independently as the wave is entirely in favour of party policies.
Sources in Congress also revealed that "during the meeting of coordination committee of the coalition government headed by Saif-ud-Din Soz that was held yesterday evening, the said issue was taken up by Congress and it was pressed by Congress for election to civic polls at the earliest."
Reliable sources further revealed that "NC, which is heading the coalition government, may take another plea of forthcoming summer season of tourists followed by Shri Amarnath Yatra for postponing the election. As adequate security arrangements are required to ensure the proper security of tourists as well as Shri Amarnath pilgrims in Kashmir valley, the government may express its helplessness to hold elections in the absence of proper security arrangements in the entire state."
Will the coalition be able to keep up its promise? Only time will tell.
