Farooq succumbs to the pressure, announces dismissal of Goni
Multi-Crore JKCA scam aftershocks

srinagar, Apr 10: Finally yielding to the pressure from the executive body in the wake of multi-crore scam that surfaced recently, president Jammu and Kashmir Cricket Association Dr Farooq Abdullah Tuesday announced sacking of its chairman Muhammad Aslam Goni and assured that fresh elections of JKCA will be held soon.
Dr. Farooq Abdullah who till today was totally in denial mood, could not resist the pressure from JKCA working committee members any more and announced sacking of his close confident Muhammad Aslam Goni from the chairmanship of the association.
The announcement came at a time when a team of BCCI auditors have arrived in Srinagar to investigate the alleged bungling and embezzlement of the BCCI grants by office bearers of JKCA where majority of the members have been blaming Goni for financial irregularities worth crores in connivance with Ahsan Mirza.
Sources told Early Times that JKCA Working Committee members met here today with its president Dr. Farooq Abdullah in chair to take stock of the situation that has arisen after the multi-crore scam surfaced in the association. It was for the first time after the financial irregularities came to fore that Dr. Abdullah attended the meeting. Pertinently JKCA working committee members had been demanding the resignation of Goni and to initiate CBI probe into the financial scam in the state sport body which unearthed recently.
More than 40 of the 62 working committee members of the JKCA had been demanding Goni's resignation. The FIR was lodged by the association against the treasurer and general secretary.
The police had raided the houses of these two office bearers in Srinagar and had seized the bank accounts opened by them to divert the association's funds, however, Goni was denying involvement in the scam.
"Goni is out, fresh elections to the association will be announced soon" sources quoted Dr Farooq Abdullah as having told the working committee which met here today. Pertinently BCCI while taking cognizance of the allegations of embezzlement in JKCA, has decided to take action and has asked its auditors to investigate the matter and prepare a detailed report on the situation. Sources said the auditors will arrive here Wednesday to start probe. The allegations came to light when Muhammad Aslam Goni, the JKCA managing committee chairman, lodged an FIR with the police on March 10 against Ahsan Mirza and Mohammad Saleem Khan - the JKCA general secretary and chief administrative officer respectively - accusing the duo of pushing the BCCI funds into bogus bank accounts created in the name of the association.
But on March 21, Goni himself was dragged into the controversy when majority of the 62 JKCA working committee members claimed Goni, too, was involved in the scam and demanded he resign from the chairman's position. The working committee requested JKCA president Farooq Abdullah to dissolve the current management committee and organise fresh elections at the end of April.
Sources said Dr. Abdullah asked the members to start preparations for fresh election to the association. Pertinently, in what was described as a shocking move by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), Goni on March 30 was named manager for Team India for one-off T20 match against South Africa at the Wanderers Stadium in Johannesburg.
It was indeed strange that instead of either starting an inquiry or calling for an independent probe into the affairs of the scandal-hit JKCA, the BCCI had sent the body's chairman with the team. Not to mention, Goni's appointment as manager for the one-off tie had drawn sharp criticism from all quarters. It merits a mention here that opposition Peoples Democratic Party has been demanding CBI inquiry into the multi-crore scam and registration of FIR against Dr. Abdullah in the scam.
