Omar bats for AFSPA revocation, Cong says situation not conducive | Discordant notes within coalition: PC takes stock of 'fissures' | | Early Times Report Jammu, Apr 10: In what can be seen as discordant notes and fissures in J&K coalition on key issues, Chief Minister Omar Abdullah during his meeting with Union Home Minister P Chidambaram strongly advocated for withdrawal of armed forces and revocation of AFSPA, the alliance partner Congress presented a contrasting view point and conveyed to PC that situation was not conducive for the step. Sources said during the security review meeting with Union Home Minister at his official residence , Omar Abdullah pushed ahead what he has been contending as commitment with masses and strongly advocated that the time was ripe for initiating the process of revoking AFSPA and it must begin from the areas where Armed forces presence is not needed .In order to substantiate his claim on peace prevailing in such areas, the Chief Minister and a battery of senior civil and police officers presented sufficient data and statistics contending militancy had almost waned from such places. However, on the contrary the Congress leaders during their separate meeting with PC at Guest House are learnt to have expressed reservations , something in line with what is essentially the principle stand of the party on AFSPA revocation issue, sources said. Even though J&K PCC president Prof Saif-u-Din Soz declined to divulge anything, Congress MP Madan Lal Sharma candidly said that party made its view point clear. "The issue did not come as a pre decided agenda but we presented our view point over this …..we conveyed to him that situation was not conducive for revocation of this Act in the state", Sharma said. Sources said even though Chidambaram's visit was essentially aimed at reviewing security situation but he also took stock of the prevalent political scenario in the state particularly in the backdrop of the discord between the alliance partners NC and Congress on certain key matters and issues of governance. PC was also directed by the high command of Congress to have an assessment of fissures and differences on all counts, sources said adding that this exercise was basically meant to boost the morale of Congressmen and give impetus to their spirit which has been constantly on the ebb on account of NC's dominance and non cooperation . The issues lying pending with Coordination committee for want of cooperation , for instance on appointments in Commissions ,also came up for discussion. PC's separate meeting with Congress delegation which included almost all ministers and senior leaders was meant to set right certain discordant notes within coalition partners and to straighten some discords even on policy matters, sources said. |
