| 1 killed, 20 hurt as bus falls into gorge at Doda | | People protest, block road | |

JAMMU, Apr 10: One person was killed and at least 20 others were injured after the bus in which they were travelling skidded off the road and fell into a gorge at Reyanka near Marmat in Doda today.
The ill-fated SRTC bus (JK02Y/0396) was on its way from Marmat to Doda. The incident occured early in the morning after the driver failed to negotiate a sharp curve.
The bus fell into about 80 ft deep gorge, resulting in the death of a passenger and injuries to about 20 others.
The dead was identified as Javed Alam (26), son of Ghulam Rasool of Prabble, Marmat.
The rescue operation was started by locals with the help of police. The injured were later evacuated to the Doda district hospital where the condition of some of them was stated to be serious, police sources said.
Those undergoing treatment at the district hospital were identified as driver Mohammad Hussain (36), son of Ghulam Haider of Roat, Shokat Ali (34), son of Habib of Prabble, Kirti Devi (18), daughter of Karnail Singh of Dranga, Blassa Devi (28), wife of Zalim Singh of Goha, Shadi Lal (35), son of Sain Singh of Goha, Parmeet (8), son of Shadi Lal of Goha, Zakir Hussain (30), son of Mohammad Sadiq of Prabble, Sunita Devi (19), daughter of Pyar Singh of Bari, Ram Krishan (57), son of Phoola Ram of Mangota, Bihari Lal (29), son of Kunj Lal of Labbar, Jagdish Raj (45), son of Maan Chand of Gunn, Dhori (33), wife of Jagdish Raj of Goha, Saidullah (25), son of Bashir Ahmed of Mangota, Bodh Raj (40), son of Dogga Ram of Hambal, Abdul Satar (70), son of Ghulam Qadir of Mangota, Ganga Ram (57), son of Devi Singh of Goha, Shadi Lal (30), son of Sunit Ram of Labbar, Ajaz Ahmed (25), son of Rehmatullah of Prabble, Riaz Ahmed (23), son of Rehmatullah of Prabble and Naresh Kumar (25), son of Bishan Dass of Prabble.
Locals also held a protest outside the district hospital against the district administration for its alleged failure to provide ambulances on time.
They were later pacified by senior police officers.
Meanwhile MLA Doda Abdul Majid Wani has expressed anguish over death of thirty years old Javed Ahmed s/o Ghulam Rasul r/o Prabal in a Bus accident, today, at Marmat Doda.
He asked the Deputy Commissioner Doda to process case for providing ex-gratia relief to the family members of the deceased and all those injured in today's bus accident. Meanwhile, Deputy Commissioner Doda has released an interim relief of Rs. 5000/- to family members of the deceased youth and Rs. 1000/- each to all those injured in the accident out of Red Cross fund. |
