Kashmiris still recall Vajpayee's rule, his sincerity in restoration of peace, normalcy | | | Early Times Report Jammu, Apr 11: The Vajpayee led NDA Government that ruled at centre from 1998 to 2004 is rated as highest in the Kashmir Valley among all Indian rulers who ruled at centre as people irrespective of their party affiliations recall the then political dispensation at Centre as one of the best government which India ever had. Not only the common Kashmiri but even the separatists acknowledge that the NDA was the best political dispensation at Centre which had really worked to find a solution to the crisis in Kashmir valley and meet the aspirations of people by initiating a peace process with Pakistan. The 2003 was a historical movement and turning point in the history of Valley when Atal Behari Vajpayee addressed a public rally in Kashmir to show the then government's sincere willingness in solution of the problem on the basis of humanity, said Ghulam Ahmed Rather of Devsar Constituency and a political activist. He showed his willingness in holding the dialogue with separatists on the basis of humanity and this appeal had wider implications as Kashmiris thought for the first time some one in Delhi had sincerely come to heal the wounds of the people in state, he added. Taking a U turn from the official stand on Kashmir issue it is the then Prime Minister who extended hand of friendship with Pakistan by announcing opening of Uri- Muzaffarabd road and Poonch Rawlakote road for trade between the J&K state and PoK, said Ahad who recalled that had Vajpayee been 30 years younger than his age the situation in state could have been far better today as he was the first Indian leader who understood the aspirations of the people of all the three regions and made a sincere effort to redress them within the frame work of Indian constitution by addressing all issues with Pakistan who was the main trouble shooter in Kashmir, he added. Supporting his views Faqir Ahmed from Uri in Baramullah district of North Kashmir said that not only the people from main stream parties but separatists also admit the fact that the Vajpayee had the guts to solve the Kashmir imbroglio within the framework of Indian Constitution. It was for the first time during his period after the 1977 Assembly elections that free and fair poll were held in the state and PDP a new regional party emerged to challenge over 50 year old NC's hegemony, he added. He said the new regional party succeeded in framing the coalition with congress in 2004 assembly elections and the smooth transfer of power led to a sea change in Kashmir situation and it was the beginning of a new era. The Government also cooperated with new State Government in J&K and extended all help to it in restoration of normalcy and peace so that the people's confidence in the democratic institutions increases, he added. He said that the PDP leaders themselves acknowledge this that the then NDA Government cooperated with them fully in restoration of peace in the state. ``The trade between the people of POK and J&K would have been a distant dream and the start of bus service would have been a distant dream for the people living on either side of LoC had Atal Ji not taken an initiative in this regard'', said Gajender Sigh from Baramullah whose family had also migrated from Muzaffarabad during unfortunate partition of the country. This shows that Atal Ji is a great statesman and a thinker ahead of his time, he said adding, being a visionary he set an example for others to follow and if the Union Government will act on his policies the solution of Kashmir issue can be found within the frame work of Indian constitution. |
