Will Jamat-e-Islami pull out from Geelani's Hurriyat? | | | Early Times Report Jammu, Apr 11: One year has passed since Jamat-e-Islami indicated that it may pull out from Hurriyat (G) of which it is a constituent. A Jamat spokesman had made clear that the pull out will take effect in April 2011. But the party seems in no position to `desert' the conglomerate even today. Political circles ascribe various reasons to Jamat silence. According to them Geelani is very strong and pull out from his faction of the Hurriyat may be suicidal for the organization. The killing of Jamait-e-Ahlihadees president, Moulana Showkat Shah in a landmine explosion outside a mosque in Gaw Kadal, Srinagar last year in April is another reason for delaying the pull out. The already strained relations between Jamat-e-islami and Syed Ali Geelani reached a new high in 2010 when Dr Shafi Shariti published his book Quaid-e-Inqilaab: Eak Tehreekh Eak Tareekh (Leader of revolution: A movement, A history). The Jamat took strong exception to Geelani's biography by Dr Shafi Shariti which was released in 2010. The Jamat had accused the author of maligning the image of the organization. "The author has tried to project Jamat-e-Islami as a pro-Indian political party. He has further mentioned that Jamat was fed by Indian intelligence agencies. This is intolerable." Without naming anybody, the Jamat said the book had blown a particular person out of proportion. However, the organization that groomed that person has been ridiculed and condemned", the Jamat made clear. Geelani responded by issuing a disclaimer. "The views expressed are author's own. I do not subscribe to it. The Jamat did not react to the disclaimer. However, it decided to boycott future meetings of the separatist conglomerate. Geelani also said that he did not subscribe to the authors views. "But I uphold the freedom of speech and expression. We cannot curb a writer's freedom. Geelani also said he did not know the author. But when Shariti was arrested in March last year for `killing noted human rights activist, HN Wanchoo' Geelani expressed shock over the arrest. |
