HC admits ex-SSP Karnail Singh's appeal challenging life imprisonment | | | early times report JAMMU, Apr 11: A high court division bench of Justice Mansoor Ahmed Mir and Justice Muzaffar Hussain Attar today admitted for hearing the appeal of ex-SSP Karnail Singh and his wife Ratno Devi, challenging life imprisonment. The court also issued notice to the state in this regard. The couple was charged with the murder of minibus driver Nitin Sharma of Nagri, Kathua. The division bench, after hearing the two sides, observed that it appeared that since the appellants were in custody, they were not in a position to file the appeal in time. It then condoned the delay in filing the appeal. Nitin and Karnail's daughter, who had developed illicit relations, married on March 31, 2005, without obtaining the consent of her parents. The duo had fled homes but returned after some time. The girl was then kept under strict vigil by her parents as a result of which she once jumped from the rooftop of their house to meet Nitin. In the process, she injured her both legs and was unable to walk for certain period. Irked by this development, a deep-rooted conspiracy was hatched to do away with Nitin who did not surrender to various threats given to him and the members of his family to disassociate himself with the SSP's daughter. Karnail, who was that time SSP of IRP 6th Bn, Rajouri, and his wife Ratno Devi made up their mind to do away with Nitin. In furtherance of this, Ratno conspired with SPO Naresh Kumar of Langer and killed Nitin. |
