Mustafa Kamal again at it | | | Soon after he was resurrected from oblivion by his brother,Dr Farooq Abdullah,by reinstalling him as Additional General Secretary of the National Conference Sheikh Mustafa Kamal is again in the playfield of Congress baiting. Had he not been reappointed as Additional General Secretary of the ruling party Kamal would have not been in a position to fulminate against the Congress, with which his brother led NC is sharing power,in general and the PCC Chief,Saif-ud-Din Soz in particular. Only Sheikh Kamal can criticise, rather berate the Congress. Other NC leaders have been assigned with the task of fulminating only against the PDP. During his first tenure as Additional General secretary and spokesman of the NC he had shown his guts for questioning the st ate's accession with India. He had shown his muscles for blaming the centre for gradual dilution of the original spirit of Article 370,that gives to Jammu and Kashmir a special status within the union of India. He crossed his Laxman Rekha by fulminating against the Congress which he has charged with having stabbed his father in the back. His audacity in doing so was not questioned because of his being additional General secretary of the NC and its spokesman. And when Dr Farooq dropped Kamal from the party post, which he had been assigned in October 2011,within less than two months he did so to keep the Congress in good humour. This was so because as Chief spokesman Kamal had fulminated not only against the Congress but against the Army too. Even after having been removed from the two important party posts Kamal continued to attack the Congress and in one of his statements he had stated that both his nephew, Omar Abdullah, and his brother, Farooq Abdullah, had buckled under the Congress pressure. He had not spared even his nephew when he dubbed Omar Abdullah as a weak chief Minister. The main provocation to Farooq to remove his brother from the party posts came when Mustafa had criticised the AICC General Secretary, Rahul Gandhi, whose support had enabled Omar to survive as Chief Minister. It must have been compulsions within the family and within the party that had motivated Farooq to reinstall Mustafa as Additional General secretary. And Mustafa has caused an embarrassment for his brother and nephew when he berated the PCC Chief,Soz,for holding NC responsible for not empowering the Panchayats by delaying incorporating 73rd and 74th amendments in the Panchayat Raj Act. Soz had voiced this feeling at a public function in Jammu.Mustafa has not questioned the authority of Soz in criticising the NC for not incorporating the amendments in the Panchayat Act. He wants Soz to air his views on this issue either at the meeting of the coordination committee or at the working committee of the Congress. Possibly Mustafa is ignorant about the role the media has been playing in projecting deliberations at party meetings which become public. Hence a stage has come when there is no difference between airing views on vital issues in public or in party meetings. NC leadership may have felt embarrassed but there are reports indicating that Mustafa has been given the party post again as he is the only NC leader who has the knack of hitting at the Congress below the belt. Possibly this is what the NC leadership wants. The NC leadership feels safe because of support it has received from Rahul Gandhi, union Health Minister, Ghulam Nabi Azad, and the Union Home Minister, P.Chidambaram. Hence it can afford to tease the state unit of the Congress which is a divided house. |
