Differences between NC, Cong mar early prospects of ULB polls | | | Early Times Report Jammu, Apr 12: Even as J&K coalition government has reaffirmed its commitment on holding the Urban Local Bodies elections as early as possible, what appears to be the main hurdle at this point of time is differences between the allies NC and Congress over the fundamental issue of politics, as both are yet to arrive at unanimity as to whether the polls be held on party basis separately or jointly as coalition on the lines of friendly contest. Sources said even though the government has projected unpreparedness of Election authorities in preparing and finalizing draft electoral rolls as the main reason for delaying the polls, it is actually sharp and vertical differences that exist between the alliance partners over the mode and conduct of elections in the two capital cities in political terms. Sources said the Urban Local Bodies elections came up as the key issue in Coordination Committee three days back where both the parties presented viewpoints in a candid manner. But even after threadbare discussion none of the parties could convince each other as both, as per their own assessment and calculations have different things on mind as far as elections are concerned . Sources said Congress is trying to convince NC that both partners support each other in the Municipal polls so that it (Congress) is able to garner as many seats in both Srinagar as also in Jammu where it eyes the post of Mayor in Jammu Municipal Corporation with support of NC candidates. Congress, sources said , is also trying to register 'good' and visible presence in Srinagar Municipal Corporation , again banking on the support of the NC, for the post of at Deputy Mayor, if at all it is able to perform better than other parties in contest. However, NC is opposed to this idea and is trying to explore chances of success on its own so that it manages dominance over all other parties at both the places in terms of number game. There are differences on other fronts as well over the Local Bodies polls which is why the government is not able to announce the dates for the elections , sources added. |
