| NC makes political harakiri by agonising Rajputs | | | ET Report
jammu, Apr 13: The politicization of the function to unveil the statue of Hari Singh with virtual boycott of National Conference leadership could cost the party politically. The absence of chief minister at the function was noted and regretted by not less than Ajat Shatru, NC MLC and grandson of late Maharaja.
The late Maharaja has not only emerged as political icon of Jammu region but the Rajput community reserves special feeling for him.
This community is an important vote bank at many places in Jammu region and in some constituencies it has played a role of game changer. Not very far off from Jammu, in Nagrota constituency, has been represtned by Rajput candidates even by Ajat Shatru in 1996 election and the fact he lost it by just 67 votes speaks about the influence of Rajput votes here.
It's the constituency being nurtured by Devinder Singh Rana, the political advisor to the CM and his absence of such an important function has been taken seriously by the Rajput community.
The NC which has managed to make political footprints in the Jammu region, even in Jammu district, by making surprise Assembly wins, has also been accused by demonising Maharaja Hari Singh, with allegations being leveled against its founder for promoting and planting concocted stories in the minds of Kashmiri people.
Even though much water has flowed down since the exile of Maharaja, but his unveiling of statute had suddenly renewed interest about him in the State, more so in Kashmir valley and it was the time for NC to not only course correct historical follies but also rectify its past and generate good will in not only Jammu region but to smoothen the feelings of Rajput community.
By absenting from such and important function it has only antogonise the feelings of this community.
In Jammu district alone, NC had in past represented Marh, Nagrota, Bishnah and Aknoor constituencies, where this community has sizeable vote bank. All of them have gone away from the hans of NC and by showing disrespect to Maharaja it had only set the ball rolling for more losses in the next general elections. |
