Festivals strengthen bonds of communal harmony, mutual brotherhood: Sham
'Efforts afoot to explore Akhnoor's tourism potential'

AKHNOOR, Apr 14: Like other parts of the country, the Baisakhi festival was celebrated at Akhnoor with enthusiasm and lot of gaiety.
The main function was held at Jia Potha Ghat on the right bank of river Chenab wherein thousands of people from different parts of the State participated in the annual event.
The festival was organized by the Department of Tourism in collaboration with other agencies.
Minister for Health, Horticulture and Floriculture Sham Lal Sharma was chief guest and Vice Chairman, OBC Advisory Board, Kuldeep Raj Verma was guest of honour on the occasion.
The artists showcased the rich Dogra culture and significance of Baisakhi festival with their enthralling acts. The jam packed audience applauded the thrilling dance presentation by the school children and Jackson group.
The Sandhya Aarti after the culmination of festival was center of attraction, wherein hundreds of devotees took part. Earlier, the traditional Pooja was performed by the Minister on the bank of river Chenab to mark the beginning of the Mela as the river is considered to be a sacred one like Ganga. Speaking on the occasion, the Minister said that festivals bring people of different religions together and strengthen the bonds of mutual brotherhood and unity. He said festivals are harbinger of peace, tranquility and bring joy in our life. We all should take a pledge to eradicate social evils from the society and make collective efforts to bring reforms in the society. We should also work for the uplfitment of weaker sections, equality and helping the needy.
He said Akhnoor is a sacred town where famous sufi saints worshiped on the bank of River Chenab.
The river has great religious significance, where people of different communities visit and perform the rituals and immerse the ashes of their dear ones. People also get holy dip in the River on all auspicious occasions and festivals. In view of its religious background, the Government has brought the Akhnoor town on the tourism map.
