Protests rock Ramnagar over disengagement of SPOs | | | Early Times Report Jammu, Apr 14 : Protests today rocked Ramnagar town against the Jammu and Kashmir Government's decision to disengage local special police officers (SPOs) in Udhampur district. Disengagement of 29 SPOs has provoked local people including heads of political parties, intellectuals, self-help groups among others. Prominent lawyer and Youth Congress leader R S Pathania led a huge protest march in Ramnagar. Raising slogans of 'take back SPOs', the procession converged at tehsil office, Ramnagar. Pathania alleged that SPOs from Ramnagar, demanding decent wages, are being silenced by issuing disengagement orders. He demanded a comprehensive policy for recruiting these SPOs as constables in the state police force. Pathania later handed a memorandum addressed to Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh, UPA chairperson Sonia Gandhi and J&K Chief Minister Omar Abdullah in this regard, to the district Tehsildar. Earlier this month, 100-odd SPOs had went on strike in Ramnagar to press for their recruitment. Police had then placated the agitating SPOs by promising to look into their genuine demands. |
