Omar to seek AFSPA repeal at CMs' meet | | | Early Times Report Jammu, Apr 14 : Encouraged by the calm in the state, Omar Abdullah seems determined to raise the AFSPA repeal issue at the Chief Minister's meeting in New delhi on Monday. The Chief Minister, according to sources close to him, is expected to press for lifting the law at least from some areas of the state. Presently the entire state except Ladakh region is under AFSPA. It was extended to the Valley in 1990 along with the border belt along the Line of Control, in Rajouri and Poonch districts of Jammu region. However, rest of Jammu region was brought under the Act in 2001. Omar, sources said, is for fighting militancy. According to him in areas where militancy has ended, the law must be lifted, sources said. Interestingly Omar promised an AFSFA free state during the recently concluded budget session of the legislative assembly. Sources said the Chief Minister believes the situation has turned conducive. "The separatists are considering their participation in elections and the commoner wants to enjoy dividends of peace", he believes. |
