While three passengers sustained serious injuries, all the other survived with bruises, police sources said. The bus (JK02Y/0385), which was being driven by its untrained conductor, was on its way from Kishtwar to Palmar. Driver Jagdish Raj was said to be sitting on the seat next to that of the driver.Sources said the conductor, who did not have much knowledge of driving, lost control over the bus near Bandarkoot as a result of which it fell into about 400 ft deep gorge. A possible tragedy was averted and the occupants had a close shave with death as the bus got trapped between two trees. Had it landed in the rocky gorge, the situation could have been altogether different, the sources added. On May 4, 2008, 32 people, including some government school teachers, were killed in a road accident in the same area. Mohammad Imran, an eyewitness, told Early Times over phone that he happened to be there when the bus rolled down into the gorge. Several locals rushed to the spot along with police and rescued the trapped passengers, he added. The conductor was stated to have fled the scene soon after the incident. Deputy commissioner (DC), Kishtwar, Mohammad Hussain Malik said that he had asked SRTC incharge to conduct an inquiry and submit the report by evening. "As soon as the incharge submits me the report, action under law will be initiated against the culprit," he added. |
