Early Times Report
Jammu, Apr 14: Highly placed sources have told Early Times that the State Government has decided in principle to enhance the retirement age of its 4.5 lac work force from the existing 58 to 59 years to avoid a face off between the State Government and its employees.
The State Government employees have already announced a day's token strike on April 17 to press for their demand to enhance the retirement age from the present 58 years to 60 years as is applicable to Central Government employees. Leaders of the Joint Coordination Committee (JCC) and the Employees Joint Action Committee (EJAC) have accused the State Government of being callous and non-serious towards the demands of its 4.5 lac employees.
Minister for PHE and Irrigation, Taj Mohiuddin had said recently that the high powered sub-committee headed by the State Finance Minister would submit its recommendations to the State Government once the same is asked for. But, given the mood of the employees who have threatened that their day's token strike on April 17 can well be the beginning of an indefinite strike if the State Government continues to show cold shoulder towards the demands of the employees, the ice has finally molten.
Chief Secretary, Madhav Lal has told the media that there is no reason for the employees to go on strike as the sub-committee was actively considering their demands. "The cut off date for announcement of the Government's decision on our demands was 31 March, but the way the State Government has been delaying a decision even after an agreement has already been signed with the representatives of the State Government indicates that some forces within the Government are sabotaging the decision. We shall not now wait beyond our stated dates", said a leader of the State Government employees.
"Keeping in view the mounting pressure and the eagerness of the State Chief Minister who wants to avoid a face off between the Government and its employees, a via media has been worked out. Instead of enhancing the retirement age to 60 years, it has been decided to increase the retirement age by one year for the present", highly placed sources told Early Times.
