Visitors criticize Govt for not opening park during Baisaikhi mela | | | Early Times Report Jammu, Apr 14: Hundreds of people who visited the canal at Rajinder park today to take part in annual Baisakhi celebrations were put to many hardships as the Rajinder Park was not opened for the visitors even on the Baisakhi Day. The Rajinder Park gave a deserting look as the visitors were not allowed to make entry inside without the ticket as was not prevalent earlier. It was only over seven years back that the then coalition Government headed by Mufti Mohammed Syeed handed over the maintenance of Rajinder Park to J&K Bank and since then the entry was restricted to tickets only. Though decision was not opposed the people but it was a general feeling that the park will be made open free of cost for all visitors on Baisakhi Day so that they can participate in annual Baisakhi mela as was a precedence in past. But no attention was paid to this request by the authorities at the helm of affairs knowing fully hundreds of people drawn form different parts of city visit the Canal Road to participate in annual Baisakhi Mela. Though as usual the mela continued with big fanfare for the entire day but the visitors were put to embarrassing situation as they had to wonder on the link roads across the canal for entire day under the open Sun as Rajinder Park was made out of bound for visitors. Despite knowing fully that there is no seating place on the road and people visiting the area to participate in the Baisakhi mela will be put to many hardships in case the canal is not opened for them the, but the authorities at the helm of affairs did not bother to take any step in this direction said Raman Gupta resident of Kunjwani who is regular visitor to the Baisakhi mela along with his children for over two decades. ``We used to come here for over last 22 years and earlier we enjoyed to sit in Rajinder Park under shade of trees or on benches play with each other and take a dip in the canal. But this all is missing now and one does not like to visit here''he added. The majority of regular visitors have now discarded to participate in mela function in view of the harsh attitude of the Government which closed the Rajinder Park for free visitors, said Gupta. The authorities were fully knowing that people in large number used to visit the canal on this day can't the tourist Department on its own pay in lump sum some amount as the fee for keeping the Park open for the day as this would have attracted more visitors to participate in the function. Making a dig at the public representatives from Jammu, Raman Khajuria another regular visitor to mela said the public representatives and ministers from Jammu region also failed to take up this issue and seek special concession for keeping the park open on the Mela Day. |
