Omar to have tough day today
CMs' meeting on Internal Security
4/15/2012 11:01:33 PM

Early Times Report

Jammu, Apr 15: Chief Minister Omar Abdullah could have a tough day tomorrow in convincing Prime Minister to revoke AFSPA from some parts of the state, a demand which he has been raising consistently.
Omar Abdullah by all expectations would raise this issue at the meeting of Chief Minster's on internal security called and to be chaired by Prime minister.
Even though Home Minister have been supportive of the suggestion of Omar Abdullah but Army has by all accounts virtually vetoed this proposal, citing security and operation reasons.
Defence Minister A K Antony had also not given any hint of accepting this proposal of the CM.
By raising up this issue in the meeting to be attended by all CMs , Omar would try to garner support and in a manner would try to convince the PM about it.
The platform would be given Omar such an opportunity after his public annoucement in this regard last year. The PM heads the cabinet, only which can give final nod to this proposal even to some suggestions mooted by home minister.
However, it's not that Omar would get support from all CMs on this issue. The BJP ruled states would not buy this argument in line with the policy of the party, which for among others reasons doesn't want to hurt the sentiments of the Army.
Even non BJP states, but not ruled by Congress would not lend all out support to Omar on this issue for not only security but for political reasons.
The CM would however, by all accounts by raking up this issue would try to garner poltical, even brownie points, to his advantage. The meeting also comes at a time when serious allegations of corruptions have marred the image of this government and PDP had been publicly appealing Centre to take action on this account like it has against its own ministers and chief ministers.
However, the CM had weakend his case by announcing much before the meeting that this Act would go away six-month before the completion of this tenure. It clearly spelt the politically connotations attached to this demand and statement and would go extra mile to help CM as his mentor and patron in the Congress has got his political voice weakend with political debacle in UP, where he had put up all this stakes.
