Adhocism galore in J&K Sports Council led by CM | I/C Secy, I/C CSO, I/C SO and I/C managers (mis) managing show | | Early Times Report
Jammu, Apr 15: Mocking at the tall claims of the state government to give good and responsive governance to the people, the Jammu and Kashmir State Sports Council, the apex governing body of sports in the state is marred by adhocism from top to the bottom. Notwithstanding the fact that Chief Minister himself is the president of the Council, all its officers including the Secretary, the Chief Sports Officer (CSO), the Sports Officer (SO) and the managers of various districts and stadia of the capital cities are merely holding charge of their posts and none of them has been confirmed to his designated post. While the Chief Sports Officer, Khurshid Ahmad Baba is yet to be confirmed even as a sports officer and has been confirmed only as a manager, the sports officer Jammu, Rajan Sharma is also confirmed as a manager only. Similarly, most of the in charge managers of the stadia are yet to be confirmed even as selection grade coaches. The appointment of Kiran Wattal, an engineer with tainted service record was also made on temporary basis allegedly on the behest of a Minister in the coalition government in complete departure from the provisions of the constitution of the Council as he was not even a member of the representative body. Even though his entry was later facilitated by seeking resignation of a benevolent member; he has still not been elected as the Secretary which is mandatory. This adhocism is being reflected in the performance of the Sports Council as there is great deal of dissatisfaction amongst the employees, sports associations and above all, the sportsmen. While the employees have gone on protest at least thrice in last six months seeking redressal of their legitimate demands, players and the associations have been deprived of camps, facilities and incentives due to them. "Sports council owes huge dues to almost all the associations, but they are not forthcoming" said a sports administrator who did not want to be named. "Now associations do not want to organize competitions and hold camps because Council does not release their dues" he added. "The sports infrastructure in the Council is also on the decay due to this adhocism as there is no interest and urgency amongst the officers" he added further. While government has understood that sports can help engaging youth and keeping them away from violent means, it needs to streamline the functioning of the sports council by eradicating existing adhocism.
