If US can detain Kalam for frisking why cry over SRK episode? | | | Early Times Report
Jammu, Apr 15: Chief Minister Omar Abdullah commented on Shah Rukh Khan's detention at a US airport on his twitter asserting that one must either travel at the terms of the country he/she is visiting or not travel at all. Commenting on the media hype that SRK's detention by US authorities received recently, Omar Abdullah disclosed that he had been detained for 2 hours at a US airport when he went there on a diplomatic passport. By international convention the diplomatic passports are treated as hassle free travel documents and most of the formalities which are followed in respect of other types of passports are relaxed for persons travelling on diplomatic passports. It has become fashionable for VVIPs to raise a hue and cry if they are subjected to routine checks and balances when they travel abroad or even when they travel within the country. Incidents of VVIPs misbehaving with airlines staff, maintaining a royal aloofness with other passengers on board and even at times engaging in boxing matches with the airlines staff have been reported many times. The VVIP syndrome is something which has inflicted our politicians, film stars, bureaucrats and others. It must be clearly understood that VVIP treatment is not a carte blanche for misbehavior. In fact, a VVIP must behave in more restrained and exemplary manner. Things of an ordinary citizen can get away with often become banner headlines if the VVIP does those during his/her travel or interaction with other persons. An ordinary citizen might shout at the people he/she comes into contact with, but the VVIP must understand that he/she always remains in the eyes of the people who look upon the VVIPs as persons of a different genre. What might be usual for an ordinary citizen can often become a taboo for a VVIP. People spitting in public are usually ignored, but if a VVIP is seen spitting in public it is a banner headline. There are thousands of privileges which the VVIPs enjoy and there are a thousand of restraints which must be exercised by a VVIP. How many times ordinary citizens travelling abroad face hardships and inconveniences at airports? Does an ordinary citizen getting detained at a US airport catch so much media imagination as did the SRK detention at the US airport? Do people who cry over the detention of VVIPs at international airports especially in the US and Europe even know that one has to remove his/her shows during the security frisking in the US? Omar Abdullah has enlightened many by his twitter comment and next time a VVIP is detained for a few moments at a US airport the media should do better than start crying foul on it. The US, like India, has been the target of terrorism and they have an undeniable right to protect their country from being a victim of terrorism once again. If any VVIP thinks he/she is big enough not to be asked questions while travelling abroad, then it is better for their self-respect not to travel at all. If Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam, the former President of the country, can be asked to subject himself for a thorough security check-up then it must be accepted in all fairness that nobody else should claim immunity. Yes, it is a different thing that we always roll red carpets to anybody coming to our country from abroad. That is perhaps because we have been ruled for over two hundred years by foreigners. |
