Fruit and other crops damaged due to hailstorm in Kashmir | | | early times report Srinagar, Apr 15: The Horticulture department has constituted committees to assess the damage caused to fruit and other crops following heavy rains and hailstorm in south Kashmir. Official sources said recent heavy rains and hailstorm besides snowfall on upper reaches have caused damage to fruit and other crops in south Kashmir, particularly in Shopian district, where the farmers claimed that 50 per cent damage has been caused to fruits. They said hail storm and icy cold winds following fresh snowfall damaged fruit crops in the district. The Horticulture Department has constituted a number of committees to assess the damage caused to the crops by rains and hail storm. However, officials of the department said that it will take some time before finally deciding the actual loss caused to crops. "We have to take into consideration everything, including age of the fruit tree, the quantity of fruit it had at the time of hailstorm and rains and remaining fruit on it before reaching to any conclusion about the total loss," the officials said. Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Chief Mehbooba Mufti last week visited a number of affected villages in Shopian district. She demanded immediate compensation to farmers |
