| District Commander Killed | | | Srinagar, January 26 Police today claimed to have achieved a major success when it killed the District Commander of Hizb-ul-Mujahideen in an encounter at Kokarnag in south Kashmir Anantnag district. Identified as Mohammed Shafi Baji alias Aurangzeb alias Peer, son of Mohammad Yaqoob Khatana resident of Kachwan Kokarnag, the militant is said to have been active in South Kashmir for the last 15 years. Senior Superintendent of Police of Anantnag district, Abdul Gani Mir, said that the operation was launched when police received a specific information regarding presence of the Hizb District Commander at village Kachwan in Kokarnag area. SSP said that the area was cordoned off and a search operation started to trace the militant. While the search operation was on, the holed up militant started firing on police cops that resulted in an encounter, police said, adding that the District Commander was killed in the ensuing encounter. SSP said that the slain militant was active since 1992 in the area and was wanted in number of IED blasts. He termed the killing of HM commander on the eve of Republic Day as a major success for J&K Police and a blow to the militant organization.
