Early Times Report
JAMMU, Apr 16: In what can be seen as Party High Command's direction to strengthen Congress in the J&K State, State unit of Congress is being restructured with major changes in the executive body . The two stalwarts of the Congress Ghulam Nabi Azad and incumbent President of the PCC Prof Saif-u-Din Soz has been asked to submit respective names for Pradesh Congress Committee executive as also its office bearers.
Sources said even though there is every likelihood for continuance of Prof Soz as PCC chief for one more term, but a change cannot be completely ruled out as the High Command has also sought a panel of names for the PCC chief. Sources said the Congress stalwarts have already started exercise of drawing up panels in which consideration is being given to leaders from all the regions and even the district level senior functionaries can be taken on board in this organizational reshuffle.
Sources also said there is one lobby in New Delhi which wants Union Health Minister and former Chief Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad to take additional charge as the PCC chief , but he may not like the burden of the assignment at this juncture even though he has started taking interest seriously in J&K political affairs. His pre occupations with Union Health Ministry , sources said may not allow Azad for now to accept this offer. However, due consideration is also being given to the strong urge of the Jammu Congress men that the post of J&K PCC chief must rotate and any changes this time should follow the rotational aspect .
Sources also said even though in the present circumstances Prof Soz may be chosen for one more term as PCC chief , but there are some quarters active in New Delhi who want Azad to be active on State political scene. Azad , in other words shall be seen as playing major role in terms of strengthening the party , particularly in Kashmir region where party wants to consolidate gains at all costs. Sources also said Azad who has started frequenting J&K lately, will be seen on the visits of the State with increased spree , attending rallies, public meetings and even involving in organizational matters.
It is pertinent to mention that as per the constitution of the party, the restructuring of the Pradesh Congress Committee should happen after every two years. However , as and when this exercise is given a practical shape this year, it will be done after a gap of four years in J&K.
