Old widow mauled by leopard at Kishtwar | | | early times report JAMMU, Apr 16: A 65-year-old widow was this afternoon mauled by a leopard at Suzna Palmar in Kishtwar.Mahataba Begum (65) was walking through the forest area close to her residence when the leopard mauled her at about 1 pm, causing her critical injuries. Hearing her cries, some passersby ran to her rescue. However, when they reached the spot, the leopard had already disappeared, official sources said. They then removed her to the district hospital, Kishtwar. However, because of her critical condition, she was later referred by doctors to the GMCH here. Mushtaq Ahmad Sheikh, who was among those who reached the spot first, said the old woman had sustained severe injuries in the incident. Mahataba is the second woman who has come under the leopard attack in the past three days. Earlier, Rafiqa Begum (42), wife of Bashir Ahmed Khandey, was mauled by the leopard on Saturday. She was undergoing treatment at the district hospital, Kishtwar. Wildlife DFO (Kishtwar) Bashir Ahmed Shah said a team of wildlife experts, led by range officer Sajjad Hussain, had rushed to the spot to take stock of the situation. He said the two women had been mauled by a female leopard who had given birth to two cubs. It was likely to attack anybody who ventured into the area close to the place where its cubs were, he added. Shah said people had been asked to change their route till the leopard moved to another area along with its cubs. As per norms, Rs 30,000 would be provided to both the injured women, he informed.
