No immediate impact of Afghan developments in Kashmir | | | early times report Srinagar, Apr 16: There was no immediate impact of Afghan developments in the Jammu and Kashmir. Talking to reporters on the sidelines of a function here today, Lt General S A Hasnain, GOC 15 Corps, said the situation in Afghanistan and Pakis-tan was being closely monitored. "We do not see any immediate impact of these developments in Afghan-istan and Pakistan," he said, adding "We have to remain vigilant." He said Army, State police and other security agencies engaged in counter insurgency operations would maintain peace in the valley. Lt Gen Hasnain said it was because of close coordination between the security agencies, the Panchayat elections, held after three decades, were by and large peaceful in the State. About some posters issued by militant organisations in south Kashmir, he said the security forces were strong enough to foil any militant plan to disrupt peace in the Valley during summer. However, he refused to comment on the State Government's recommendation to withdraw Armed Forces Special Powers Act (AFSPA) from some areas. He said Army has already expressed its view on the subject. About the plan to bring back the Kashmiri youth who were in Pakistan-occupied Kas-hmir (PoK), Lt Gen Hasnain said it was the State Government which was dealing with this issue. "We give our recommendations as and when asked for," he added. |
